![]() ![]() In the RPG Maker series since RPG Maker 2000, tilesets are PNG images. RPG Maker MZ supports 16, 24, 32, and 48 pixel tiles (the RTP is still 48x48). In RPG Maker XP, VX, and VX Ace, tiles are 32x32 pixels in size, and in RPG Maker MV, tiles are 48x48 pixels in size. In RPG Maker 20, tiles are 16x16 pixels in size. In RPG Maker 95, a tile is a 32x32 image. In addition, a much heavier focus on autotiles is given, as a huge portion of the titleset images are reserved for autotiles. ![]() In RPG Maker VX and later, the tilesets themselves, and thus the autotiles, consist of separate images. If you’re doing an entire tileset, copy one of the default sets (Interior/Outside/Dungeon) from A (1 to 5) to B (B to E are all the same, so one will suffice. In RPG Maker 95 and later, there are autotiles that help with creating maps by automatically correcting themselves as the map is modified to have a contiguous border around itself bordering other tiles of a different type. The default tileset, the custom materials, stuff you found on the forum (don’t forget to credit the creators when you’re done), anything you feel you will need. I have some fairly specific criteria for these tilesets, though, and they're a little different from what most people might be used to. Also as a side note in the bigger areas there would really be like a zoom out function to make it easier to find the place youre looking for. In my project The Legend of Zelda: Forgotten Gates, I use a random dungeon generation system which works by stringing together various pre-made, one-screen rooms. Is an okay feature, however in some cases it is just better to design the floor, dungeon w/e yourself. Here's the tricky part: I want to be able to swap out tilesets so that the theme of the dungeon changes, without having to make separate dungeons for each possible theme. This means that all the tilesets used for dungeons have to be functionally the same, and any decorative pieces have to make sense and look good in the same context between tilesets. ![]() For example, if a forest-themed tileset had a big tree intended for taking up space in a room, then a mountain-themed tileset would need something functionally similar with the same shape (at least in terms of tiles occupied), like a big boulder. I'm providing my more detailed notes on terrain in the show/hide section below. I'd suggest that anybody seriously considering taking this on also download Forgotten Gates and play around with it for a bit-it's only a demo at this stage and you can dive right into the dungeon, so it shouldn't take too much of your time. Ideas for cool tileset themes and terrains to fill out the existing concepts are also welcome, whether you want to participate in making them or not (although I won't be giving work for just ideas, sorry). Celianna’s Tileset is one of the most popular free (non-commercially) tilesets used in RPG Maker VX and VX Ace. Terrain has significant importance in Forgotten Gates. ![]()
